Toyota Repair: 96 Toyota 4Runner, candy apple red, toyota 4runner

Question
Hi Ted,

I recently bought a nice, candy apple red, 96 Toyota 4Runner 4WD with a V-6 engine in it. It has 125k miles.  To date, it runs very smooth. I brought it in to my local Toyota dealer yesterday to have the timing belt replaced, as it is due.  The mechanic said that he may also have to replace the water pump, and that there may be more parts to replace (because they can leak) that are associated with the timing belt mechanism, but he can't be sure without opening it up and having a look at it. He showed me a diagram of it all, but “it's Greek to me”.  My question is this: would you be so kind as to let me know what other parts are associated with the timing belt, other than the water pump, so I can make an intelligent and informed decision about whether I need the new parts, or not?

You provide a valuable service.  Thank you.

Bob.

Answer
The other parts associated with the timing belt is the water pump, the upper idler bearing, the tensioner pulley and the camshaft and the front crankshaft seal, at this mileage I would recommend replacing the water pump and the cam and crank seals, it's good insurance against having to take everything apart again if the water pump should fail or start to leak a few months later, the bearings don't need to be replaced unless there is noise from them.
The toyota technician is correct, the timing covers have to be removed to check for any other problems.
