Toyota Repair: electrical systems check, camry xle, david answer

Question
Ted,
Thanks for your suggestion.  I replaced all the bulbs in the tail light assemblies.  Each bulb holder contact looks clean with no signs of melting.  With the engine and headlights on I tried adjusting the wires leading up to the bulb holders to check for loose connections, but there was no change.  All the lights mounted on the trunk door are still not working.  Please advise.

Hello Ted,
I have an automatic 98 Camry XLE V6 4dr at 127K miles.  The far left dummie light showing a yellow car with the rear lights on comes on at the instrument panel when the headlights are turned on.   The backup lights and marker lights on the trunk do not work.  The bulbs look ok (no burns and filament look good.)  I checked all the fuses under the hood and behind the coin holder, but none were burned out.  I'm not sure if it's related, but some time ago the cigarette lighter and 12V power outlet went dead while using an electric tire pump.  Couldn't find a bad fuse for that either so I gave up at the time.  Any suggestions would be great.  Thanks.

David

Before I get you too involved in a possible wiring or tail light failure relay problem, I'm going to suggest that you replace "ALL" the bulbs in tail light assemblies no matter what they look like, while you are there check for any loose ground connections neat the bulb holders and check the bulb holder contacts, make sure they are not melted or deformed in any way.

Answer
There are a couple of common problems, the wires in the small harnees on the left side of the trunk hinge tend to stretch and break inside the insulation, open the wire harness all the way to where it enters into the front, and check for broken wires, stretch them and see if they pull apart, any broken wires need to be repaired and insulated, another probability is that the tail light failure relay is shorted out, it's located on the left side in the trunk, you will have to peel back the carpeting to get to the harness and the relay.
