Toyota Repair: toyota corolla parking lights, toyota corolla, headlight switch

Question
My mother has a 1999 Toyota corolla ce. I just changed out a battery that had run down(over 5years old) for her. When I hooked up the new battery the parking lights came on. I can't seem to turn them off now. It doesn't seem to matter what I do turn engine on/off toggle the light switch on/off the things just stay on. I have disconnected the battery since I don't want the new battery to discharge completely. Do you have any clues? I would like some insight before I bring it in for servicing which always seems to cost me something. Thanks.

Answer
Possibly a problem with the headlight switch in the combination switch below the steering column, not sure, I would recommend having someone check this out, electrical problems like this can be hard to diagnose without actually being there to check the system.
