Toyota Repair: vehicle tune up, spark plug cable, diagnostic work

Question
Hi Ted, I recently took my car to the mechanic for a tune up because the car has been idling a little rough. When I got the car back it seem to be running the same. I checked the itemized bill and it list the usual parts that is replaced during a tune up, but no timing check. My question is during a tune up is there any diagnostic work done or is it just the usual spark plug cable etc. replacement stuff done? Thanks

Answer
It depends on what you tell the person that you talked to when you took the car in, in most cases if you go in and request a tune up, that is what you get, the normal stuff, but if the car still runs the same they should not return the car to you in the same condition but rather make a recommendation as to what other steps are needed to make the car run normal, I am somewhat concerned with the competence of the shop you took it to and would not deal with them any longer, take it to a Toyota dealer and have them diagnose the problem and make a recommendation what it needs to get it to run right.
