Toyota Repair: 94 4Runner engine problem, reman, 4runner

Question
I have a 94 4Runner 4WD (3vze 135,000 miles, auto) that is having some MAJOR engine problems.  I think it may have arrisen from lack of oil pressure (or oil itself), but I am not sure. Sounds like the middle cylinder on the passenger side.  Noise varies with RPM's and is a very loud metal on metal clacking.  On to my questions-  Any ideas on what it is and how to go about fixing it?  Any way to possibly band-aid it?  Mech quoted me 21 hours for R&R, is this right?  $2000 for a used motor?  any place cheaper?

Thanks much

Answer
Loud knocking noises are never good news so the engine is for the most part probably toast, I would not recommend trying to have it repaired at this mileage, rather replace it with a used engine or an aftermarket remanufactured one.
The cost depends on your location, the used engines normally sell for about $1,200, the reman units go for around $1,500 to 1,800 plus the labor, around another $1000, so the quote you got at $2,000 sounds about right.
I would seriously think about trading it it.
