Toyota Repair: carb tuning, spark plug wires, mileage engine

Question
Hi,
I,ve got a '86 corolla that has done 190000km.It has a 2E engine.I'm thinking of giving it a tune up.
I've heard that there is a sequence of steps that I need to follow.
Can you please give me directions and some tips to do this ?

Thanks.

Answer
On a high mileage engine I would recommend first of all to check the engine compression and make sure that the engine is mechanically sound, if the engine has a mechanical problem such as low compression all the tune up parts will not help.
If the engine is not misfiring and running normally the compression is probably ok, but if there is a misfire I recommend checking the compression of each cylinder.
Normally a tune up consists of replacing the spark plugs and the air filter and checking and adjusting the timing.
You can do more, replace the spark plug wires, the distributor cap and rotor and the fuel filter if they are the original parts.
