Toyota Repair: Avalon SRS dashboard light on, dashboard light, inexpensive tools

Question
One day I was just listening to my radio with the ignition in the "accessory" position...  I turned on the motor a few minutes later and while all the dashboard idiot lights performed normally, the SRS light remained on and has been on since.

Are there some things I can do to test or reset the light short of bringing it to the dealer?  For the price of diagnosing problems ($92) Should I purchase my own electronic diagnostic tool?

BTW. 1996 Avalon, 132,000 miles.

Thanks!

John

Answer
You can try disconnecting the battery for ten seconds and then reconnect it, it may clear the trouble code, if the light comes back on I recommend that you have a toyota dealer check to see what the problem may be.
The diagnostic tool will cost as much as having the dealer find out what the problem is.
Most of the inexpensive tools are just code readers and won't tell you what the problem area is and you still need to figure out or call somebody to decipher the trouble code, some of them will only read engine trouble codes and not srs codes so be careful when considering spending money on a code reader, find out before what it can actually do.
