Toyota Repair: 93 Camry Ignition switch will not turn, haynes manual, side tire

Question
Our '93 Camry is currently in our driveway with the windows
down and the sunroof open because we cannot get the key to
turn to start the car.  This problem emerged just minutes after
fixing another (almost certainly) un-related problem – the long,
sorted story follows:

The (almost certainly) Un-related Problem:

While driving my wife's car two days ago, I was cut-off in traffic
and forced to really tromp on the breaks to avoid a collision. At
that time the breaks – which had a warble/pulsing in the pedal
since I replaced them a month or so before – felt like they had
broken off.  I slipped the car into an unused parking lot and
broke loose the drivers side tire and discovered, much to my
chagrin, that the rotor had sheared in half.  The center “fins' that
hold the two sides together had rusted through and I now had
two independently rotating discs.  Well after a day of banging,
cursing, and a trip to the local automotive super store – I had
replace the offending disc and was driving home with my
assistant following behind me.  I pulled into the driveway and . .
.  The Current Problem reared its ugly head.

The Current Problem:

Anyway, I pulled the Camry into our driveway. Yelled to my
assistant to wait in the street while I moved our other car to the
side “turn around” in our driveway.  After moving the other car, I
jumped back into the Camry turned the key . . . and couldn't
turn the key. The ignition seemed to be jammed. I tried the
“wiggle the steering wheel” trick that we have to do sometimes
and nothing.  The steering wheel was not locked.  My assistant
pulled in behind me to see what was wrong. We jacked up the
front of the car and the steering wheel turned free and finally
locked.  I tried the key again and – still nothing.  The key will not
turn past the ACC location.  We cannot get it to either ON or
START.  I referred to my HAYNES manual and could not find a
sufficient answer.  We used the button by the shifter to override
and shift into neutral and still nothing. However, in NEUTRAL the
key cannot be removed from the ignition.

We have NEVER had problems with the ignition in the past.  It
worked and then, suddenly, it didn't.

I don't know if simply replacing the key cylinder will fix the
problem or if the “shift sensor” doesn't know the car is in park
or neutral or what.

You advice is most appreciated.

With the windows down and the car not starting, all I can do is
pray for no rain and have a tarp on standby.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you

Answer
Try replacing the ignition lock cylinder, remove the plastic covers around the steering column and try to get the key into the ACC position then you can deprss the release pin and pull the cylinder out, get the new cylinder first so you can see where the release pin is.
