Toyota Repair: 89 Tercel stalls while driving, 1989 toyota tercel, toyota tercel

Question
Good Morning!

My '89 Tercel has a carburetor and on the sticker under the hood the engine family is identified as:  KTY 1.5v 1 HFFO (on the engine itself - 1500, 12 valve).  I changed both the fuel filter and air filter and wasn't having any more problems until this morning.  It was around 48 degrees and I didn't really let the car warm up before driving it.  It continued to stall everytime I clutched to change gear or slow down.  I turned the air conditioner to raise the idle speed and I made it to work without it happening again.  Any new ideas on why this is happening?  Thanks for your help!

Just this morning my 1989 Toyota Tercel (manual) began to die while driving.  It would stall while the clutch was in for either changing gear or slowing down.  The car would start immediately after putting gear in neutral. (Denver's temp this morning was around 65 F and humidity around 50%, last tune up, trans fuel change and fuel filter change in 7/03, last oil change 7/04) Any ideas as to why this is happening so suddenly?  Thanks!

I need to know if the engine has a carburetor or fuel injection, that year could be either one, also see if you can give me the engine identification, check the label under the hood.

Answer
The carburetor is a main source of trouble on these engines, I assume there is no check engine light on, there could be an air leak on the intake system or the carburetor could be the problem, these carburetors are very difficult to repair and most of the time need to be replaced because almost no one knows how to repair them, including me,the factory a long time ago said not to attempt to do that and just replace them, unfortunately they are very expensive even if you can still get one from the toyota parts department, the aftermarket ones are hit and miss, you may get one that is good and then again maybe not, this is probably one of Toyota's worst engineering disasters, sorry, but it's the truth, don't know what else to advise except maybe take it to a dealer and have them diagnose the problem.
