Toyota Repair: Rack & Pinion Repair, toyota corolla sport, toyota corolla

Question
1987 Toyota Corolla Sport Coupe (2 door) 4 Cyl. 1.6 Lit. 2bbl L4 4A-C Engine Rear wheel drive. My rack & pinion is leaking. I purchased an Atsco #8561 Reman Imp Rack. Could you give me your tips on removal & replacement. I plan to do the repair myself. Thank You.
John

Answer
Center the steering wheel and tie it to keep it from moving, count the exposed threads on eachof the tie rod ends, loosen the tie rod locking nuts,  on the tie rods turn the rods until the tie rod ends are off, remove the pressure lines from the rack, remove the mounting bolts, remove the universal joint from the steering shaft, it will slide up enough so you can get the steering rack out, it should come out through the left opening in the body, on the new rack be sure it is centered make a mark on the shaft and turn it lock to lock, count the turns and divide by half, start at either left or right and turn the shaft by that amount, this will be the center, reinstall the u-joint and reconnect everything else, connect the tie rod ends and turn them until the exposed threads are the same as you counted earlier, this will get the alignment toe in as close as you can, I recommend having it aligned on an alignment machine when done.
