Toyota Repair: Automatic Transmission Seperation from Engine, haynes manual, toyota camry

Question
Hi Ted:

This is for a 1994 4 cylinder Toyota Camry with automatic transmission.

I have a rear main seal oil leak which requires seperating the transmission from the engine to install a new seal.  The Haynes manual recommends removing the engine and transmission from above and seperating them on the garage floor.  I have a 4 post lift in my garage.  It seems to me that it would be easier to unbolt and remove the transmission from the bottom of the car.  Is this the way most shops do it?

Thank you for your comments.

Answer
We leave the engine in the car and use a support bar to keep the engine from falling down in the rear, we also remove the sub frame, once the sub frame is out of the way there is nothing in the way and it's pretty staightforeward, the other way is like the Haynes manual said and may be an option for you, this way you don't have to remove the sub frame and just pull everything out the top.
