Toyota Repair: Differential problems, differential problems, line transmission

Question
I have a '95 Previa AWD LE (supercharged) with approx. 193,000 kms that has developed a problem in the front differential. I am the second owner & docuements I have from the original owner showed no problems with any components in the drive line (transmission, diffs, transfer case etc.)

I have noticed in past 3-4 months that there is a shuddering noise/sensation when I am either in forward or reverse turning left more than right in a very tight turn (steering wheel nearly fully locked).

My mechanic noticed a lot of play in the passenger side half shaft @ the differential & less play on the similar driver side half shaft.

I was recommended to a driveline/transmission specialist who after initial inspection has told me the bearing is gone on the passenger side of the front diff. He goes on to say that the book rate just to remove & re-install the diff is 6 hours! Is this correct?

He said once he opens the diff. then the whole situation will be known, this I understand.

In your experience does this or any year Previa have any premature problems or weak areas within the driveline including the diffs?

Is this specialist's book rate accurate?

How complicated and expensive will it be to replace a bearing or what else could the problem be?

Answer
Here is my advice to you based on the information you have given me, take it to a toyota dealer and have them inspect the front accessory driveshaft, they are known to crack the insulator bushings in the connecting flanges, this causes a vibration when turning especially at low speeds, I have a hard time believing there is something wrong with the differential.
