1996 Toyota Camry 2.2l 5sfe 4-cyl
I had a rod knocking, so I took the car to a little garage because I did not have the time to fix it.  Big mistake.  the mechanic from the garage disassembled the engine and did not pay any attention to the balancing mechanism below the crankshaft. He called me up and said he can't do anything with the engine.  I got the car and engine back in peices and began to fix it my self.  I have rebuilt the head and ringed the pistons and etc.  But upon assembly I can't figure out how or what to do with this balancing assembly.  Please help me out.

Thank you.

The installation of the counterbalancer is very critical, there are marks on the gears that have to be lined up and there are shims under the balance that have to be the correct thickness to establish the correct clearance between the balancer gear and the crankshaft gear, you need a dial indicator and a special tool, if this is not set up right you will have either an out of balance engine, noise, or worst case it will break when tightened.
Now here is my suggestion, reassemble the engine up to the point of installing the balancer, take it to the toyota dealer and let them set it up, believe me, this will save you money, time and grief.

Please tell me the steps to lining up the counter balance.  I am unable to take it to the shop.  I know that would be best but I haven't the funds or the means.  Pleas help.

Thank you.

This is way too involved for me to give step by step instructions, you need text and illustrations to get you through this, I suggest that you purchase a factory repair manual from the toyota dealer, you can try a Hanes manual but I don't know how detailed it may be.
