Toyota Repair: 88 Corolla SR5 Wont Start Now, corolla sr5, engine cranks

Question
Engine cranks and today I pumped the gas a few times, did nothing for about 10 seconds then tried to start the car, and it sounded as though it was about to satrt.  I did this twice, then the third time it was the same as before it cranks but won't start.

Hey Ted,
Thank you for responding to my question. Sorry about not including the following info:'88 Corolla SR5,4-spd. manual, 132,275 miles.  A couple of times I have had clicking, but that was when the car has sit for a while.  But, I haven't heard it since I've been going out and trying to start the thing for the past week or so.  My next steps are re-checking saprk plugs, fuse boxes under hood, and adding more gas just in case the gauge is shot,  Do you think these steps are worth trying?

My '88 Toyota wouldn't start a while back. I jumped and it started up fine, left it parked for a couple of days after that and it wouldn't start. Tried jumping it still no start. Yesterday, i bought a new battery and it started up, moved it into garage to check lights and replace any bulbs that were burnt out. Lights were good, radio, flip -up headlight, everything worked. Went back out a couple of hours later and found that I had not turned the key all the way to off position as I thought that I had. Today, car won't start, tried jumping it,... nothing! Switched battery with the one in my Truck, but no dice. Car won't start but all lights, radio, etc. come on.

When you try to start it is there a clicking noise if there is the starter is the problem.

I guess I should have asked you if the engine cranks and not start or does the engine do nothing at all?

Answer
It sounds like the engine is not getting enough fuel to start, I believe this one is carburated, remove the top of the air filter and pout a small amount of gas into the carburetor and see if it starts, if it does but doesn't stay running there is a fuel delivery problem, possibly the fuel pump, make sure that the choke plate is fully closed when the engine is cold.
