Toyota Repair: Easy to replace distributor?, haynes manual, napa store

Question
Do I need any specialized tools (anything I couldn't get at a small hardware store)? Also, I've heard mixed reviews about the Haynes manual, some suggest getting the Vol 1 (I think that volume) toyota factory manual, but its more expensive. Can I get by with the Haynes on this job?

Thank you

Hi,

I have a 4cyl., manual, 93 Camry with 96K. Lately I've been having problems with rpm fluctuations. Usually when I turn or turn on the AC, turn the steering wheel or something to that effect (take away power from the engine?) the engine fluctuates and sometimes, usually when I'm turning sharply, the car dies. The problem only seems to be at low rpm, when I turn and rev up the rpm just slightly (over 1500 seems to do) I don't have the problem. Also lately I have had significant problems starting, it will turn over but not catch usually.

I took it in to my local shop and they think everything is good except for the cam (?) sensor in the distributor, and want to replace it. The best price they can find for the part is $485 but when I look online or even at my local NAPA store a distributor, cap, rotor, only costs around $200-250. I'm thinking I'll just buy/replace myself but I'm not sure if I could do it (need special parts, etc).

My questions are these; does the diagnosis seem plausible? Is it pretty straight forward to change the distributor, and if so, should I get the Haynes manual? Do I need to change any wires, or anything else, that is connected to the distributor?

Many Thanks.

I think what the shop is talking about is replacing the entire distributor because the cam angle sensor among other things is incorporated in the distributor, it's not that hard to replace it yourself  in order to save some money, you will need some basic tools to do it, it would help to get a manual to help you through this.

You will need a 12mm socket, a 8" extension and a ratchet to get the bolts off, there is one you can see from the top and one underneath, remove the top of the air filter and the intake hose so you can get to the bottom bolt, the distributor gear is indexed so that it only goes in one way, with the cap off install the new distributor by pushing it into the opening and rotating the rotor until it goes in all the way, don't forget to install a new o-ring on the new distributor where it fits into the cylinder head.
