Land Rover Repair: Disco2 - gearbox overheats, coolant system, oem parts

Question
just purchased a used model - was driving home in bumper to bumper traffic on a hot day - warning light came on that gear box oil temp was high. manual said to turn off engine till cool.  was driving yesterday, and had car idling for about ten minutes or so at the drive through on a 90 degree day - light came on again. Cooled off engine and it didnt re-appear.  Should I have transm. fluid checked?

Answer
Hi Kathleen,

IF you bought if from a LR dealer, I be surprised to see this problem.  Take it back to the dealer and have them service the fluids (transmission and transfer gearbox, aka TG) to make sure all is well.  Also have them check the radiator and coolant system.  IF the rad has problems, it could affect how it cools down the transmission.

IF you bought this Disco privately, you could ask the original owner to repair this.  Most states and provinces have some protection for private sales of vehicles.

IF this is not an option, you'll have to have a garage perform the above checks and repairs.

It could be just a slow leak that caused the fluid level to drop. IF this is the case, refill and make sure seals are done properly to stop further leaks.  DON'T USE any additives to prevent leakage.  This gunk only clogs up the tranny or TG and will add to poor performance.  Have the radiator pressure tested along with the rest of the engine, just to be sure.

YOU could visit your local LR dealer and have this done.  It will be expensive though.  Nice thing is that you'll register yourself as the new owner and thus be notified if ever there is a recall on your Disco (very important).  Dealer service and OEM parts are very expensive.  If it's just fluid levels that need to be topped up, local garages could do this.  Find a garage that has experience with european vehicles (VW is almost like LR - they share some of the same parts).

Best of luck,

NB:  There exists an old tradition - give a name to your LR.  My son named ours 'Simba'.  A friend calls his 'Spot' because it has a few minor leaks.
