Hello, I am in the process of reworking a 1990 toyota 4-runner---have installed new motor, rear end, etc---it is a SR5, 2 wheel drive, 4 cyl, auto trans,my problem now which this has been present for as long as the family has owned the vehicle is the cranking system. I have rebuilt the starter, replaced the starter and the silinoid on top of the starter, battery checks o.k.---When I engage the key switch,I get a clicking from a relay switch located behind the kick plate on the passenger side above the computer unit---have replaced this also(circuit opening relay-toyota part #85910-35010) still clicks--I can unplug this relay switch and jump the switch, engage the starter with the key, plug back in the relay switch and it will crank everytime----sometimes I can let it set for a while and it will crank---can you help?          thanx  jim l.stafford

I also own a 1990 4-Runner that was having the same problem, I tried replacing the starter relay, starter and the neutral start switch to no avail, I have not figured this out other than there is a voltage drop somewhere between the battery and the starter or the ignition switch and the starter terminal,by the way, the circuit opening relay only turns on the fuel pump.
Rather than replacing the wire harness I devised a way to fix the problem at very little expense, I installed a relay between the ignition switch and the starter, this eliminated the voltage drop by applying direct voltage from the battery to the starter and bypassing basically the original wires, the relay is available at any autoparts store(basically a headlamp relay) if you are interested in trying this give me an email address and I will draw up a diagram how to do it and send it to you, but give me a few days because of the holiday weekend coming up.
yes, I will try anything, I have the bottom part of dash out and would like to fix this as soon as possible----papaw1338@comcast.net---thanks a bunch,

Answer

Go to any autoparts store and buy the relay, it's mostly used for add on fog lights or driving lights, it's about an inch square and has some terminals on it.
These terminals are numbered 30,87,87a,85 and 86.
A good place to put the relay is under the hood on the right fender well.
Use 12 gauge wire to connect the #30 terminal to the positive post on the battery.
Use the same size wire to connect the #87 terminal to the solenoid wire on the starter(it's black and white)cut the original wire and splice into it and connect it directly to the solenoid.
Use smaller 16 gauge wire to connect the #85 terminal to the black and white wire on the cold start injector, do not cut it, rather use a scotchlock connector to splice into it.
Connect the #86 terminal to ground.
You can get all the wire and the connectors at either an electronics supply house or the autoparts store.
Ignore the 87A terminal.
