Toyota Repair: brake lights, 1989 toyota camry, brake light switch

Question
i have a 1989 toyota camry.  my brake lights just stopped working one day...all the other lights are operating fine...i did have my transmission replaced about a month ago, but , the lights worked fine right after that...i did replace all of the bulbs and checked the fuses, they all seem to fine...i had heard from a friend who has been trying to help me with the problem that a 'celenoid' might have gone bad, but i have no idea where it might be located or if that might be the problem at all

Answer
Check the brake light switch first, it's located on a bracket by the brake pedal arm, by pass the switch with a jumper wire and see if the lights work, make sure there are 12volts available to one of the wires, if not, the problem is ahead of the switch and it's a voltage supply problem.
If bypassing the switch still doesn't make the lights come on there may be a wiring problem with the harness on the left trunk hinge, sometimes the wires inside this harness break because of the opening and closing of the trunk, the wires get stretched and break, cut the insulation open and check the individual wires, they may look good but if you pull on them they will come apart, then it's just a matter of repairing the broken wires, one more thing you may want to check is the tail light relay, it's located on a bracket in the trunk behind the carpeting on the left, these are also known to burn out, you can open it up to check for any burned circuits.
