Question - Thanks Paul, I'll be talking with my son tonight and see if he wants to put the seals in while I'm there next week. Are there any special tools for the job? Do you you know if the seals are sold separately? I have a couple of generic on-car valve spring compressors. On another car (my sisters 2000 Sienna 3.0) my scanner says she needs an upstream 02 sensor on bank 1.Is bank 1 on the front or back of the motor? Thanks again for your generosity, Joe Cilmi

Question - Thanks Paul, VIN  4TAVN13DXSZ317810.The oil cap is completely clean, and no sludge of any kind when I stuck my finger up inside the valve cover or breather hose.My son bought it here in New York and  just drove it to California with no problems other than the secondary 02 sensor lighting the check engine light and oil consumption. Have a Great Day ,JOE
Hi Paul, My son just bought this truck.I am a recently retired auto tech living in NY. I am going to visit him in California next week.I hope to help him out while there. The production date is 11/94, so it's not a Tacoma. It is a very clean truck with 140,000 miles and no leaks, no smoke or other problems, compression is 160-170 in all cylinders. It uses a quart every 1,000 miles.Using 20-50 Castrol has not helped. I wonder if it needs valve stem seals or are there other possible causes on these motors? He is going to change out the PCV valve today.Do the heads have to come off to get to the valve seals? Or are they accessible with heads in place? Are head gaskets a possible cause, and is Toyota waranteeing any of these problems? (He heard they might be covering head gaskets). I would greatly appreciate any info/ advice.
Answer -
get me the full vin # i will run it for campaigns
but it does sound like valve seals/i would think you would get smoke though with that much consumption of oil....compression snumbers sound good too. check the oil cap for sludge!!!!! let me know how u make out...
Answer -
i can only say at this point that the valve seals are going. or a slight head gasket leak... but from what you are telling me there is no smoke. i ran the vin for the head gasket campaign. your vehicle is not one that is covered. and if it where covered it's based on 8years and unlimited milage. you are just off. the valve seals require the valve covers and the cams to come out. it can be done with the heads in. just pressurizs the cylinder you are working on with constant compressed air. the only other thing i can think of is the crank seal in the timing belt cover leaking... which can go unnoticed. check that out... i hope i helped. paul p.... if you find anything let me know. always a pleasure to help.

Answer
b1/s1 on the sienna is on the back of the engine all the up near the rack and pinion.
as for the tools needed for the valve seals... valve seal pliers, and a special air adapter to fit into the sparkplug hole to fill the chamber with compressed ait so the valve don't drop. also a vavle keeper tool. good luck
