Toyota Repair: timing chain, pan gasket, headgasket

Question
Hi ted. Do you need to remove the head when changing the timing chain?

Answer
The head doesn't have to be removed but you have to be careful not to damage the front part of the headgasket where it makes contact with the timing chain cover.
The cover also makes contact with the front of the oil pan and the oil pan gasket will probably break, what we used to do is clean all the old gasket off, get a new oil pan gasket and cut the front part to fit on the exposed part of the oil pan then fill the gaps on the end with sealer and put a coat of sealant on top of the cover where it contacts the headgasket.
