Toyota Repair: 88 Toyota 4Runner timing chain, toyota 4runner, chain links

Question
It's a 22-RE motor.  I had my rocker arm cover off yesterday and was wondering if there is an easy way to check for wear/ strech in my timming chain.  Is there any way to measure this based on the slack in the chain without having to disassemble the whole thing?

Answer
Turn the camshaft to the right until the slack is taken out on the left side, then check the slack of the chain on the right side, you should not have maybe more than 1/4" of movement there, also check the chain links, if the edges look real shiny it means the chain is rubbing against the inside of the timing cover, look at the chain guides, if there are deep grooves it's time to replace the chain, gears, guides and the tensioner.
Another indication of a worn timing chain is that there will be a rattling type noise when the engine is cold started, it will go away as soon as the oil pressure comes up.
