Toyota Repair: automatic transmission O.D.switchI, 1986 toyota celica, overdrive switch

Question
My1986 Toyota Celica ST is a great very dependable car.One should be minor problem. One morning I got in to go to work and found pieces of the overdrive switch/button on the floorboard. The working components and 1 spring were found.Assembling any spring loaded device can be difficult at best, thats with pictures diagrams and instructions.I dont have those luxuries.Toyota web site no help. They offered to sell me the same book I already have.Chiltons no help.Hanes you can see it in 1 picture, instaled in the shifter.Dealer says not a serviceable item buy the entire shift mechanism. My guess is Im missing 1 or 2 springs, cost maybe 50cents,is the problem.I cant be sure because the only people who definately know how this goes together(TOYOTA)wont give up that priceless info.
I NEED INFO PLEASE.Istructions would be great with an exploded view would be better.Even a spring count would be more than I have.
        thank you

Answer
I believe the parts you found where the shift release button and it's spring, this normally doesn't happen unless there is another problem with the shifter.
If you look inside the opening you will see a plastic plunger one side is slanted, this should facing at you, press the plunger down and see if it comes back up, there is another spring inside the shifter handle attached to the metal rod that this plastic piece is attached to, to get to this s pring the shifter has to be disassembled.
If the plunger moves back up when pushed down, that part may be ok. Remove the two screws on the front of the shift handle and pull the outer part of the shifter up about 1/2 inch, put the spring on the end of the shift release knob and push it back into the opening with the slotted part facing down while pushing it in, put the shifter back down where the screw holes line up and re-install them.
The release button should stay in and work normaqlly, as I said, there may be another problem and if that's the case the shifter has to come apart and it's not semething I would recommend doing yourself.
