Toyota Repair: Fans, brakes and starters-toyota pickup, independent shop, toyota pickup

Question
I have a 1989 Toyota small pickup...It's a 4 cylinder..I have three things going on with it right now...Two of them I think I know the problem, the starter and the brakes...When I try to start it in the morning, it clicks for a long time then all of a sudden it turns over and starts. I have a new battery so that isn't it. Also the brakes are sounding like metal on metal when I back up...but not when I stop going forward. Anyway, can you tell me approx. how much a new starter and new brakes would cost including labor. I live in Mobile, Alabama. (But I'm a westerner...Colorado...trapped here!!!)
Anyway, the other problem is that I'll be driving along and the fan on the heater/air-conditioner just stops...but only on the high setting. if I put it on the other levels, it goes fine. And, if I hold the lever over the right, on high it will go but when I let loose, it stops. Then, after a while on a lower level, I'll put it on high and it goes again for a while...then cuts out again.
I'm a female...and I like to take care of my vehicles...but I feel like I get taken a lot when I go to the mechanic. So, if you could tell me appox. how much a starter and brake installation would be and have any ideas about the fan thing, I would appreciate it! Thanks....Leslee

Answer
Hello Leslee, welcome to my expert page.
You are correct about the starter, it needs to be replaced, as far as the brakes are concerned, I don't know whether you need front or rear or both,I don't like to give estimates on repair costs because there is a great deal of variation depending on the location and who does the repair(dealer vs. independent shop)etc. I live in southern ca. I can tell you what the starter replacement would cost here at the dealer, about $400 part and labor, the brakes about $285 per axle, this would include machining of the rotors and drums.
The heater fan problem is the control switch in the dash.
I can't do a follow up until late Sunday.
