Toyota Repair: Replace Engine, 1990 toyota camry, goodyear store

Question
Help...my car stopped running in traffic yesterday and I had it towed to a Goodyear Store thinking they could fix it.  He just called me and quoted me $4,166. (including tax) to put in a remanufactured engine from Japan.  It also includes a new water pump, new valves, replace one motor mount, new spark plugs and wires and a couple of new hoses.  Am I being taken here?  His first quote, before I fainted, was to have him rebuild it for $4,600.00 plus tax.  He then went back to the drawing board.  This is a 1990 Toyota Camry with 135,000 miles on it.  I purchased it about 5 years ago with 108,000 miles on it, so you can see I don't drive it a lot.  I do need a car that is dependable (I'm female and 66 years old, although I'm not sure what that means).  I have recently been having a problem starting the car, then Friday on my way home from work the oil light went on.  I got home and let it sit overnight and on Saturday I put in a quart of oil but when I drove it the warning light didn't got out.  I had an appointment and I was hoping to get there and then get more oil, but as I was accelerating the car was just dying.  It wouldn't start again.  Do you think this price is reasonable?  Do you think Goodyear is the place to do the repairs?  Do you think it would be worth it?  and...if all else fails, how do I get rid of a car that doesn't run?  I really hope you can give me some advice -- I have to give him my decision Monday and right now I don't have a clue.  Thanks, Gloria

Answer
Hello Gloria, welcome to my expert page.
To be real honest with you, I would not spend $4,600 on a car that is worth maybe $2800 in running condition, I would advice you to get the car out of the goodyear shop and then make some phone calls to the toyota dealer or another independent shop that is willing to install a low mileage used engine from Japan, these are available from suppliers in or near most larger cities, you should be able to get a complete engine for around $600 plus the labor to install it,maybe another $1000-1200 but you would be able to keep the cost to about $2000 depending on where you live.
If you want to sell it as is you will get maybe $500.
