Toyota Repair: Spark Plug change, air intake hose, needlenose pliers

Question
Hi Ted...I have written to you before, but I didn't get to print your answer and it is no longer in the archive.  I have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner V6.  I am trying to change the spark plugs. I am used to changing the spark plugs on simple 4 cylinder vehicles, so this is new to me.  I do have a few questions for you:

1)I first tried to gap my spark plugs and noticed that it has dual resistors?  Is there another special gapper that I need? I have the conventional one that looks like a big coin.

2)  How long of an extension do I need?

3)  What do I need to remove and how?  I recall you indicating that I had to remove the air intake tube?

4) Are there any things I should watch out for that could cause permanent damage?

2)

Answer
Hello Larry, welcome back to my expert page.
These spark plugs do not need to be gapped, just install them out of the box.
The longer extension the better, I find that a 24"-3/8" works best with a swivel socket.
Remove the top of the air filter along with the air intake hose, then remove the 3 coil packs, on the other side remove the diagnostic connector, remove the bracket that holds the accelerator cable, remove the ground wires connected to the side of the intake, this makes it easier to get the socket into the spark plug holes, a long pair of needlenose pliers works well to remove the spark plug connectors.
