I have a 1993 Camry.  The temperature gage is going to hot but all fluid levels seem normal.  It does it even though I am not idling a long time in traffic.  Sometimes just waiting at a traffic light. The water pump is less than 6 months old. What could be causing this overheating?
Answer -
Hello Jay, welcome to my expert page.
There are to things that may be the cause, you didn't tell me if it's a 4cyl or V-6, so at this time I will answer as if it was a four cylinder, if it's not let me know.
The thermostat could be sticking or the radiator may be clogged up, these are the most common.
Please clarify one thing for me,does it overheat when driving at higher sustained speeds such as freeway or expressway?

Thank you for responding so quickly!  Sorry - it is a v-6.  I haven't been on the freeway at all when it has been getting hot, just driving on errands.

Answer
Thank you for the reply, the two concerns I mentioned before still apply, some of the V-6 engines had an hydraulic controlled cooling fan, the pressure to drive the fan comes from the power steering pump, there is an electric solenoid on top of the power steering pump, it is possible that the connector has come off or was not reinstalled on a previous repair.
You can check for fan operation by letting the engine warm up, when it gets to operating temperature or above the fan should move fast and pull a lot of air through the radiator, if it stays at the same speed as when cold there is a problem with the fan control circuit, if it should happen to have electric fans make sure they are coming on when the engine heats up.
