Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry wont start, toyota camry 1995, camshaft timing

Question
My Toyota Camry (1995) will not start. It was running fine, stopped at church for 1 hour and when I returned to the car it would not start. It does crank and sounds perfectly normal while cranking but it will not start. I need some advice on what I should look for first and the logocal progression of things I should check.

Thank you very much for your website.

Answer
The first thing to check is to see if there is spark to the spark plugs, pull out one of the connectors from the spark plug and ground it by inserting a screwdriver into the end, hold it about one half inch away from any metal part and have someone crank the engine and there should be a blue spark to ground, remember that electricity always takes the path of lowest resistance and if it happens to be you about 20,000 volts will pass through your body, fortunately at very low amperage so you won't be killed but you will feel the shock.
It may have lost fuel pressure for some reason, maybe bad fuel pump, the timing belt may have slipped, it could be a bad distributor or cracked coil or rotor, there are may possibilities.
Here are the steps normally taken for a no star condition:
Check for spark
Check fuel pressure
Check engine compression
Check the camshaft timing/distributor timing
These are the basics that the engine needs to run, if even one is not correct the engine will not run.
