Tractor Repair: 986 IHC -

Question
How do I change the bearing on the rear axle?

Answer
Harold, it appears that the bearing is a tapered bearing, and has to be removed from the inside...however, there are shims and a cap over the axle, which may mean that the axle does NOT have to be removed. I haven't changed a bearing on this model. However, I would recommend that you go online, spend the few dollars, and download a service manual. They are available for this model, and it will come in handy in your future endeavors with this trac. By the way, the 986 is a venerable old performer that  is still sought after by many collectors. Good luck!
