Hi, Don! Well, this is an interesting question, mostly because there are a LOT of things that can cause this problem, but a couple of things you can check right away.....The forward/reverse valve is on top of the transmission pretty much directly under the seat, and there is a bell-crank arrangement that will sometimes bind and try to keep the tractor out of gear. The valve spool may not be coming to it's proper point because of the bind, although the shifting and clutch will feel normal....also, check for cable stretch.
It could also be that the  washer broke between the springs on the point valve in the end of the inching spool and is dumping the oil in the shuttle valve. This should be checked as well.... As well, you could have a broken shaft in the trans. But it's not the likely scenario. Make sure you check your hydraulic levels and be certain your screens and fluid are clean......and good luck!
