Tractor Repair: Case 1370 Power Shift, clutch pack, broken bolts

Question
When it's idling after oil gets hot in transmission. I can go from power shift 1 to 2 to 3 & my gauge drops into yellow on 2 & red on 3. I can pull it back to 1 & goes into green. I can speed engine up & it doesn't drop so much. I feel like I've go some seals in the 2 & 3 clutch pack leaking. It would cost more to break it than tractor worth. Have you ever heard of anybody putting a 10-40 or heavier oil in the transmission--like mix 1/2 & 1/2 heavier oil & lighter weight transmission oil? Would TransX for automatic transmissions help if like a gallon of it mixed in transmission oil to soften seals?

Answer
Sorry, but heavier oil will not fix an internal leak in the powershift.  Some of the sealing rings are steel and some are teflon so nothing needs to be added to soften the seals.  That stuff is for external leaks.  The symptoms you have are usually not caused by leaking clutch pack seals anyway.  They are caused by broken C2 and C3 clutch carrier bolts.  When this happens, the carrier spreads apart enough for the oil to leak out before it even gets to the clutch packs.  The pressure is usually good in powershift 1, then  sometimes gets worse in 2 and then gets real bad in 3, which matches your description exactly.  The only way to fix it is to split the tractor and remove the powershift to replace the broken bolts.
