Tractor Repair: 856D Intn. Farmall hydralic drive shaft, clutch pressure plate, drive shaft

Question
how do you remove and replace the shaft that drives the PTO and hydralic pump in the above mentioned tractor , Do you break the tractor at the bell housing or further back at the transmission?

Answer
The tractor has to be split at the bell housing between the engine and speed transmission to replace the short top shaft.  It's common for the splines to wear and strip out where it's driven off the clutch pressure plate.  If for some reason the long bottom shaft needs to be replaced, the tractor must be split twice in both the front and the back.
