Tractor Repair: Farmall A Re ajusting valves, farmall a tractor, exhaust stroke

Question
I have a 1941 Farmall A tractor it has been setting for about 10 years under cover. I have rebuilt the carburettor. cleaned the points. Then We found two stuck valves so I pulled the head and had the valves freed and re valved. my question is when I put the head back on I'm not sure on how to re time the valve's. I know you start on the timing mark in the clutch housing then with a feeler gauge you adjust the first valve. After that I am not sure,Do I turn the motor a full revolution and do the next valve? or what? Thank you any help is greatly appreciated. This tractor is going to be used on our small vegetable farm.           Thank you  Ken

This tractor has a gas engine and by the looks of things low hours.I also have some mechanical skills

Answer
The valves do not need to be timed, but they do need to be adjusted to get the proper clearance.  There is a way to adjust all the valves by turning the engine to top dead center and adjusting some of the valves, then turning the engine one complete revolution and adjusting the rest.  That way you only have to turn the engine once, but I don't have a manual that shows how to do it that way.  The easiest way is to ignore the timing marks and simply adjust each valve while the other valve for that cylinder is open.  For instance, if the intake valve is open on #1 cylinder, adjust the exhaust valve.  Then turn the engine until the exhaust valve is open, and adjust the intake valve.  Repeat for all the cylinders.  You will have to turn the engine after each adjustment, but it's easy to do it this way and you don't have to worry about timing marks or if each cylinder is on compression or exhaust stroke.
