Tractor Repair: John Deere injector pump, injector pump, white smoke

Question
Sir I have a JD 2010 diesel that smokes and misses when first started [white smoke] then clears up and runs fine, any possible causes. thanks Bill

Answer
Possibly bad injectors, low compression, or worn injection pump.  Incorrect timing can also cause it, but the timing does not change once it is set.  This is a symptom after a pump has been removed and not timed correctly when it is installed.  Check compression first and if it is good, have the injectors tested or replace them.  If compression is low, the engine will need an overhaul.  The pump is a last resort if everything else is good.  Bad fuel can also cause it, but it would not clear up.  It would continue to smoke and run rough.

PS  Forgot to mention, you might want to remove the valve cover and check the valve adjustments.
