Tractor Repair: IH 584, water return, fan belt

Question
I have not been able to keep lights on my tractor for a long time. Last week the tempature gauge showed it was overheating. I replaced the thermostat, drained and flushed the colling system. Put in new antifreeze and water. Then discovered the water return manifold was not excessive hot, gauge still reads hot. help! Fred

Answer
Maybe the gauge is telling you it's overheating when it's not.  Gauges, especially electric ones, sometimes don't tell the truth if a sending unit or the gauge goes bad.  Check the engine temperature with a thermometer or infrared heat gun to verify if it is actually overheating.  If it is, make sure the fan belt is tight and shine a flashlight on one side of the radiator and look from the otherside to see if you can see light between the fins.  Sometimes a radiator will look clean from the outside, but the fins will be plugged in the center where you can't see it.  Not sure what you mean about the lights in the first sentence of your question.
