Tractor Repair: 1086 International Tractor, hydraulic pumps, drive shaft

Question
My 1086 International is having trouble with the power lift it will not pick up equipment and the power steering will not work, it is very hard to steer. What do I need to do or what parts do I need to buy?

Answer
First make sure the hydraulic oil level is full and that the filter is not plugged.  But if it happened suddenly, it's likely that the constant running shaft is not turning.  There are two hydraulic pumps.  The hydraulic system for lifting an implement is supplied by the rear pump, and the power steering, brakes, and TA are supplied by the front pump.  If it won't lift and it won't steer, it's not a pump problem because both pumps don't fail at the same time.  The shaft that drives both pumps is probably not turning because the splines are stripped or the drive hub rivets are sheared off.  If that's the problem, the tractor has to be split to repair it.  The drive hub is in the center of the pressure plate for the clutch, and the drive shaft is removed out the front of the speed transmission.
