Tractor Repair: case 1070, hex bolts, head bolts

Question
i have the case 1070 with the poorly put together
transmissions. the shaft the i am referring too is the
transmission shaft that has the sliding gear shaft. the
shims that i am talking about are behind the plate on the
front of that shaft, it has the 3 bolts,(the bolts that were
previously in there were not allen bolts). the plate holds
the "input" gear or "head gear" and sets the preload on the
bearing. how do you set the preload? also the "input" gear
can be turned either way, i see that center hub on the
"input" gear is flush on one side and the other side sticks
out roughly .040". what way faces forward? thanks

Answer
Instead of allen head bolts, yours must have hex bolts with a metal lock plate with tabs that you bend against the head of the bolt to lock them in place.  It must be an early serial number. Later tractors have allen head bolts that have loctite on the threads.  The flat side of the gear goes toward the front of the tractor.  As in my previous answer, to shim it you assemble it with no shims and tighten the 3 bolts just enough to draw everything together and take out the slack, then remove the bolts and plate and measure from the front of the gear to the front of the shaft with a depth micrometer.  Put in enough shims between the plate and the front of the shaft to equal the measurement.  If the measurement is less than .003 inch, then no shims are needed.
