Tractor Repair: Case 1070 tractor with no reverse, shift fork, mechanical transmission

Question
QUESTION: I have a case 1070 tractor. The tractor is a high / low range mechanical transmission.  It is not a power shift.  Recently I lost reverse gear in the tractor.  All forward gears still work as does both high and low range.  The tractor was not working hard when it happened. No noise was made, gringind etc. I had been using the tractor and put it into neutral and got out to open a gate.  When I got back in I had no reverse gear.  I have checked the linkage and this does not appear to be the problem. Thanks for any advice you may be able to provide.

ANSWER: There is probably a broken shift fork.  It would require removing the transmission top cover to repair.

QUESTION: Hopefully one last question.  I notice I have a hole in the floor of the cab over top of the transmission cover. Would I be able to do this job through this space or do I need to remove the cab to do this job?
Thanks again for your help.

Answer
It can be done through the hole in the cab floor, but it's not easy because the transmission cover is bigger than the hole.  Everything can be disconnected and unbolted through the hole, but the cover has to be slid out the side because it won't fit through the hole.  It helps to have 2 people doing this, one in the cab and one on the side.  Bolt a short piece of chain onto the cover to use as a handle for lifting because the cover is heavy and hard to handle.
