Tractor Repair: 5140 1000pto, collar pins, output shaft

Question
I have a 1990 5140 2wd with 8400 hrs., great tractor we've had it since new, most of our gear is 540 pto but I hooked up to 1000 and have nothing happening when I put the PTO in gear. When I put the shaft in there is no resistance when you try to turn it by hand, and there is when I have the 540 shaft in place. Everything works fine in 540 mode, what is my next step? Thanks.

Answer
Hello,

There is an internal shift mechanism that moves a shift collar to give you the correct speed for whichever end of the output shaft you are using.  As you probably already know, the shaft is longer on one end and pushes a shift collar against a spring when you insert it into the tractor.  When the short end is installed, you don't feel spring resistance and the spring pushes the shift collar back.  It is common for the shift collar pins to break, or the pin grooves in the shift sleeve to wear out, or on the older style shift sleeve, for the end of the sleeve to come loose.  The pto will have to be removed from the tractor and the necessary repairs made.  The shift sleeve is now made differently so that the end can't come loose.
