Tractor Repair: IH 464 engine, vacuum leaks, vacuum leak

Question
Arnie, I have a international with a gas engine, it dies under a load acts like it is starving for fuel. I have to chock it to start up again. I put a clear fuel filter on and it seems to have fuel coming in, stays 3/4 full under load. The fuel pump is pulsating so I know it is pumping. I am thinking the carburetor. Any ideas?

Answer
Even if it seems like it might be getting enough fuel, check the flow of fuel coming out of the tank anyway.  Sometimes it can fool you.  Even though the fuel pump is pulsating, make sure it is actually pumping fuel.  The fact that you always have to choke it again to start it leads me to believe there is something else wrong, though.  A vacuum leak or carburetor problem would cause it to act like that.  Make sure the manifold and carburetor mounting bolts are all tight to prevent vacuum leaks.  If everything checks out OK, remove the carburetor and clean it out and check the float level.  Don't forget to make sure the ignition system is good.  Weak spark to the spark plugs can have similar symptoms sometimes.
