Tractor Repair: Case 580E, loctite silicone, clutch packs

Question
I get a grinding shuddering noise from the transmission. It some times goes away if i select reverse but then comes back. It also feels like the trnsmission is locking up, then it frees up and is ok for a while

Answer
you must have a damaged bearing in the gearbox
has this got the gearbox and the back axle separate from the engine driven by a prop shaft from the torque converter to the gear box
if its making a grinding noise i would not drive this anymore until it is sorted or things will only get worse
if it is the gearbox i described remove the prop shaft the 4wd shaft and remove the front plate from the gear box and you should be able to see the problem from there when you have this plate off check the fwd/rev clutch packs for worn seals and discs. if any bearings are being replaced be sure to check the preload on the bearings you have to have the front plate bolted on to check them.so don't put any silicone on until you are happy with the shim setup then when everything is good use special loctite silicone 515.it is an extra thin silicone used so as not to upset the shim clearance
most case garages stock it but you should be able to get it off anyone who sells loctite products
