Tractor Repair: 275 New Holland Square Baler, inch clearance, new holland

Question
How do you adjust the needles- we have them installed when you turn the flywheel and they go up they are hanging in the knotters.
Thank you

Answer
Hello,

If you can't get enough adjustment, the needle yoke may be bent or twisted, and would have to be replaced.  If the needles broke off near the tips, it might be OK, but if they broke off near the base, the needle yoke is probably bent or twisted.
As stated in my previous answer, the needles should lightly rub the sides of the knotter frame and have 1/8 inch clearance between the needle and twine disc of the knotter.
The best way to adjust them is to remove the hay from the area of the bale chamber where the needles go through, and remove the pin from the clevis on the right side of the needle yoke so the needles can be moved up into the knotters easily by hand. Loosen the 3 needle mounting bolts slightly and move the needle left or right until the needle just barely rubs on the side of the knotter frame.  Tighten the long bolt that goes through the needle to hold that position.  Use the two short bolts to adjust the needle up or down until there is 1/8 inch clearance between the needle and the twine disc of the knotter.  By loosening one short bolt and tightening the opposite one, the needle can be pulled up or down as needed to obtain the clearance.  Tighten all bolts securely and recheck.  Move the twine fingers under the knotters by hand and make sure the tips come very close to the needles without hitting them.  Install the pin back into the needle yoke clevis.

All this is very important to make it tie correctly and avoid damage to the needles, knotters, or twine fingers.
