Tractor Repair: starting tractor, safety switches, workmaster

Question
I have a 1961 Ford Workmaster diesel.I came in from mowing, killed it by shutting off fuel(no keyed ignition other than button push)When I tried to restart, the starter turned quarter of a turn then a whinning noise began,I thought coming from selenoid.Replaced the selenoid, charged the battery, hit the starter w/ a hammer but now nothing. It was converted to 12 volt systemm, what am I missing?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Gary

Answer
You need to make sure you have power to the start side of the solenoid. If you don't have power when you turn the key then you need to check the safety switches. Make sure you do try to start this tractor in gear. If you do have power to the start side of the solenoid then your starter is bad.
