Tractor Repair: tractor lift, ford 4000 tractor, pressure pipe

I am writing this for my husband, he has a ford 4000 tractor which the lift will not work properly he thinks its the hydraulic system which would like to repair hisself. He wanted to know where he would have to start, and began as money is tight.

i know where your coming from money is never flush on a farm
does the lift go up with no weight on it.Are there any gargling noises coming from the tractor when you work the lift
if the lift works better when the tractor is revved up high its a good sigh the pump is worn
if the lift doesn't work at all even with no weight it could be a linkage for the control lever
a broken pressure pipe internally worn seals
if you can give me some symptoms of what is happening i can help further
also does the tractor have a loader or an auxiliary coupler for tipping a trailer
get back to me and i will try and narrow in on the problem
