Tractor Repair: 656 International, negative terminal, test light

Question
I've replaced the coil, the points, condenser made sure the points are clean and 0.20 inches gaped I have 12 volts from the switch to the coil, coil to the distributor and no spark between the points what else could be wrong??????????

Answer
Hello,

Possibly there is a short circuit or broken wire in the distributor.  The small wire that goes from the negative terminal of the coil to the distributor goes into a small plastic insulator on the distributor.  Sometimes these insulators short out, or the wire breaks between the insulator and the points.  Make sure nothing inside the distributor is touching the connection where the condenser wire is attached, or it will short out the ignition system.  Also, there may be enough power to show 12 volts on a volt meter or light up a test light, but not enough amperage available when under load during operation because of a poor connection.  Check all the wiring and connections between the switch and the coil.
