Tractor Repair: International 1086 pwr steering leak, steering wheel, hydraulic fluid

Question
I recently purchased a 1981 IH 1086 when driving it up forward the ramp of my trailer the tractor stopped and rolled backwards down, the steering was also not working after inspection I noticed hyd fluid leaking from the steering module on the engine side of the fire wall.Topped up the hydraulic fluid everything worked normal again I checked all the lines that is not the problem.I suspect the top seal is leaking on the valve. I proceeded to remove the steering module or valve as it may be called by removing the lines and the one hold down bolt at the top. It doesnt seem to want to come off. Is it attatched to the sttering wheel on splines is there any allan keyed screws that need to be taken loose? Your help is greatly appreciated

Answer
Hello,

The steering control unit that you are referring to is called the power steering hand pump.  There are actually 3 bolts holding it onto the firewall.  Besides the one bolt at the top, there are 2 bolts at the bottom.  There are no splines on the shaft.  There is a pin through the shaft that fits into slots in the steering column.  After removing the lines and the 3 bolts, the hand pump will slide right out.  To install it again, it's easier if you remove the steering column by unscrewing the knob under the steering wheel that tightens the telescoping column.  The steering wheel and the column will pull right out.
