Tractor Repair: Flow divider valve, flow divider, farm tractor

Question
I have a Case 454 farm tractor, with a power steering problem.I have found that the flow divider valve is stuck.I removed the plug from the MCV assembly and the spring came out,but the upper piece of the flow divider valve did not. I need help figuring out how to extract it.I was advised to remove the plug and run the engine to let the hydralic pressure blow the upper piece out. This procedure did not work. The power steering problem is a lack of pressure. Am I correct in assuming that the sticking flow divider valve is the issue? I will be waiting for your reply.

Answer
Hello,

Maybe.  It depends on what position it's stuck in.  If it's stuck one way, the steering can receive all the oil and work fine, but starve the other functions.  If it's stuck the other way, it might make the steering weak under certain conditions.  If the orifice in the flow divider spool is plugged, the steering won't work either.  There is also a steering relief valve in the MCV that should be checked.  The spools on some machines have threads in the end so that a small bolt or screw can be installed in the end to help pull them out.  If yours doesn't have threads in it, then the MCV may have to be removed to get it out if it is stuck very tight.
