Tractor Repair: 301 allis diesel block, emery cloth, ring seals

Question
The piston liners have 2- o'rings near the bottom that seal it to the engine block. My block has pits were the top o'ring seals. Were the bottom o'ring seals is fine. Wondering about JB weld? The pits are small and few.

Answer
Hello,

Some people have used JB Weld or silicone, but with any patch up job there's always a chance that it will leak.  You might get lucky and it will work OK, but if it doesn't, you end up doing the job over again.  If the pits are small and few, you have a better chance of success but it's up to you to make the decision.  The bottom of the liner can be slightly distorted when it is installed if the bore of the block is not perfectly round and smooth.  You will have to do a real good job filling in the pits so that the area does not get built up too far with filler.  A distorted liner can cause scoring of the piston.  Check the fit of each liner in the block without the o-rings installed to make sure they slide in freely without forcing them.  Smooth the area that was filled with emery cloth.  When you are satisfied that they fit OK, then install the o-rings and do the final installation of the liners.  The only other alternative is to have the block bored and repair sleeves installed in the o-ring sealing area.
