Tractor Repair: farmall 806, cold change, cold climate

Question
ok sorry its confusing when cold the steering and ta doesent work properly. if the tractor is idling the ta will shift and tractor will steer easily while tractor is cold. when the throttle is opened slightly while cold the ta will not shift for some amount of time and the steering is very hard. all of these symptoms are while cold when the tractor warms up everything works properly at all rpms. while cold the steering is very hard and it makes a growling noise when trying to turn in either direction but if not being moved and no pressure against steering wheel it gets quiet. the brakes work properly at all times no matter the temperature or what the throttle position but steering and ta work better at an idle while cold. thanks

Answer
Hello,

The TA, steering, and brakes are all supplied by the same pump mounted inside behind the multiple control valve on the left side of the transmission.  The hitch and remotes are supplied by a different pump in front of the left rear axle.  If the pump for the TA and steering was bad, the problem would normally be better when the oil was cold and get worse when the oil was hot.  Yours is the opposite, so I don't think the pump is the problem.  It sounds like the pump is starving for oil, which is why it works better at idle.  When you throttle it up, the pump is trying to draw more oil than it can get and starts cavitating.  The oil flows easier when it's hot, so that would explain why it gets better as it warms up.  If there was a suction leak and the pump was sucking air, it wouldn't matter if it was hot or cold.  Change the hydraulic oil and filter if you haven't already done so.  If the filter is getting restricted, it could cause it.  If you are in a cold climate and there is moisture in the oil, ice crystals could restrict the filter until the oil warms up and melts them.
