Tractor Repair: new holland 1920 tractor, clutch disk, clutch system

Question
Hello Arnie, I have a new holland model 1920 tractor. It is 4wd with a loader. I recently went out to get my tractor from the shed but when i tried to put it into gear it would not go. The tractor was running and i had the clutch depressed as far as it would go. The tractor would attempt to lurch forward every time as i tried to put it into gear. My tractor has a two stage clutch system with a shuttle shift. When i parked the tractor the evening before it was operating just fine. How can the clutch just suddenly go out. Or is there something else i should look at. All fluid levels are fine. Also do you know where i can buy parts for my tractor online. Thank you for your time and effort to answer these questions. -Anthony

Answer
Hello,

Like you said, the clutch won't just fail overnight.  It sounds like it is stuck, or the pilot bearing is siezed.  If they sit for a long time especially in wet weather, the clutch disk will stick to the flywheel.  Since it was sitting in a shed out of the weather and only sat for one night, this is highly unlikely.  If there is only about 1 inch of free travel and it still won't release, then the tractor will probably have to be split to be repaired.  If the pilot bearing is bad, it could cause the transmission to keep turning even though the clutch is released.  Or one of the release fingers on the pressure plate could have failed.
