Tractor Repair: Ford 4000 diesel tractor 1969-71 model, steering gearbox, diesel tractor

Question
I read your answer about the tractor that was leaking a brown liquid from under the steering wheel. Mine is doing the same thing plus I can hardly steer my tractor. I replaced the power steering pump before I even noticed the leak from the steering wheel. It steered great for about a day before it got hard to steer again. Any suggestions on what to do about the steering. I will get the seal you recommended and replace it. Will this help with the steering?

Answer
Hello,

The seal that will need replacing to keep oil from coming out under the steering wheel will not cure the other problem except it will stop the oil level from getting too low that could cause you to lose steering.  If there are any problems causing loss of steering other than low fluid, they will have to be addressed separately.  If the pump is new and it's full of fluid, then the only thing left is the control valve unit inside the steering gearbox.  There is a filter inside the reservoir, but that should have been obvious when the pump was replaced.
